What happened to search being impartial? Google Music Search isn’t.

Just this week, Google announced a partnership with music services iLike and Lala to provide music content on page amongst a search for a band, song, or album name and even a lyrical search.

Now, I’m a huge fan of Google Wave, and partake in many of Google’s products on a daily basis. But, Google Music Search, really? It’s a genius idea and could have been extremely useful, but unfortunately, I’m disappointed.

Local and regional musicians work very hard and diligently to shamelessly promote themselves, and participate in services like iLike and Lala to promote themselves but Google’s new Music Search does not help them at all. Do a search for any of the following local/regional acts from Georgia:

The Taj Motel Trio
Nate Currin
Last November

Nothin’. Now do a search for Lady Gaga or Dave Matthews Band. How is that a true “music search”?

Unfortunately, this blog post of mine probably feels more like a vent but I had hoped for more from this search giant. For the most part, their organic rankings algorithm is impartial but this just seems like a popularity contest. I hope this is just the beginning of their testing with this new search tool because if not, it’s going to make competing as a musician even more difficult.
